Razer Sharpens Blade Gaming Laptop with Faster GTX Graphics ...

Razer is officially putting the gaming laptop industry on notice. Come September 30, the company?s second iteration of its Razer Blade notebook will be available for purchase. Featuring over 100 tweaks and improvements, it?s a force to be reckoned with. We have all the details and some juicy unboxing ready for you.

Boasting a slim 0.88-inch aluminum chassis, the 6.6 pound Blade is one of the thinnest and lightest gaming notebooks on the market. But don?t assume that the Blade?s skinny profile means Razer?s skimped on the specs. The 17.3-inch notebook is packing a 17.3-inch full HD display, Nvidia GTX 660M GPU, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB 7,200-rpm hard drive and a 64GB SSD. A yet to be announced Core i7 processor will be powering the whole affair.

Razer?s innovative Switchblade interface, complete with multitouch LCD touchpad and 10 progammable macro keys are also making an appearance. Razer has also left USB 2.0 in the past with 3 USB 3.0 ports.

There?s a catch. The Blade is going on sale for the wallet-emptying price of $2,499. Still, that premium should come as no surprise to dedicated PC gamers; something this slick-looking is never cheap.

Sticker shock aside, we?re impressed with the overall design of the chassis. It looks like the love child of an Alienware M17x and a MacBook Pro. While we have yet to run our benchmarks, we?re eager to put the new, improved Razer Blade through some rigorous testing, including an all-night fragging session. Stay tuned for our full review.

DISH Launches dishNET Broadband, Bringing High-Speed Internet to Rural Americans with Slow or No Access

New high-speed Internet brand offers affordable satellite Internet service nationwide starting at $39.99

Combine with DISH TV service for bundle pricing, convenient payment, installation and customer service options
14.5 million underserved rural residents no longer need to wait for broadband build out

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 27, 2012 ? DISH (NASDAQ: DISH), a leading national provider of satellite TV, is expanding the availability of its broadband service with the launch of dishNET, a high-speed Internet service via satellite nationwide. Available Oct. 1, dishNET offers customers the convenience of one bill, one installation, one customer service number and a $10 monthly discount when bundled with DISH's most popular TV programming packages

Ideal for rural residents underserved, or unserved, by wireline broadband, dishNET offers 4G-level speeds that are about 50 percent faster than the typical residential broadband connections in American homes. The affordable, reliable high-speed Internet service starts at $39.99 per month and is available with next?day installation.

DISH's CEO Joseph Clayton is unveiling dishNET today at the flagship Cowboy Maloney's Electric City retail store in Jackson, Miss., the historic retail launch site of digital satellite TV and satellite radio services.

"Today, we are launching a revolutionary consumer broadband service that delivers high-speed Internet available in metropolitan areas to rural markets nationwide," Clayton said. "With nearly one-in-four rural residents lacking a high-speed connection, reaching these underserved markets is vital. Our mission is to provide broadband at an outstanding value with fast speeds and large data plans."

In Aug. 2012, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported 19 million Americans lack access to high-speed Internet, including 14.5 million who live in rural regions. The FCC highlighted that 23.7 percent of rural residents lack broadband access.

The dishNET satellite service offers rural residents download speeds up to 10 Mbps. These speeds are fast enough for typical Internet applications, including social media, telecommuting, music streaming, online video streaming and even Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.

"Many unserved and underserved markets are years away from a telco or cable broadband build out, but dishNET is available today," said Brian McIntyre, vice president of Broadband at DISH. "These services will have powerful, positive impacts for kids, educators, businesses, farmers and families -- no matter how far out of town they may choose to live."

Living in the Jackson area, the first official dishNET family got a preview of the new service. Jeff Thigpen, father of five and a high school athletic director in Ridgeland, Miss., is now trying dishNET Internet and DISH TV service with the Hopper? Whole-Home HD DVR.

"We no longer have to worry about tethering a cell phone to our home computer to get on the Internet," said Thigpen. "Since my girls are required to do much of their high school homework online, dishNET will help them move much faster when submitting school work. In fact, one of my daughters says it's as fast as working on the computers at school."

The dishNET brand leverages advanced technology and high-powered satellites launched from Hughes and ViaSat to provide broadband coverage nationwide. DISH will tailor its service to suit a customer's needs, location and budget. All services are sold, installed, billed and supported by DISH under the dishNET brand.

Pricing, Packaging and Availability

In rural and outlying suburban regions nationwide, dishNET satellite broadband starts at $39.99 per month (plus equipment fees) for 5 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload speeds and data plans of 10 GB, when bundled with DISH's popular America's Top 120? or higher programming packages and with a two-year agreement. Combining dishNET with DISH TV saves $10 per month. Most satellite customers can upgrade to a 10 Mbps /1 Mbps plan available with 20 GB of data for $49.99 per month.

Satellite broadband service includes five @dishNET.com email accounts, each with 2 GB of storage and an easy-to-configure online mail portal that combines web search, news, entertainment and weather updates.

Installation is free for new and existing DISH TV customers when dishNET is bundled with DISH's television programming and $99 when ordered as a stand-alone service. Existing DISH satellite Internet customers can upgrade to the 5 Mbps or 10 Mbps speeds for $199.99.

In addition to satellite Internet service, DISH's own competitive local exchange carrier will also fold its wireline broadband service into the dishNET brand. Urban and suburban residents living in a 14-state region and access high-speed Internet with 7 Mbps starts at $29.95 per month. Upgrade to 12 Mbps service for an additional $5 per month or 20 Mbps for an additional $10 per month. This service is available in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

France unveils a budget heavy on taxes

PARIS (AP) ? The French government presented a budget Friday that was heavy on taxes ? including a controversial 75 percent income rate on high earners ? but which critics said lacked fundamental reforms that could jumpstart economic growth.

President Francois Hollande's cabinet defended the spending plan for next year, calling it a "fighting budget" that would win the "battle" against joblessness and help growth.

Like many European countries, France must tread a fine line between cutting the debts that dragged them into the current financial crisis and investing in the economy to spur growth.

The French economy, the second largest among the 17 countries that use the euro, has not grown for three straight quarters, the national statistics agency confirmed Friday. Unemployment has been on the rise for more than a year and stands at 10.2 percent.

Economists warn, however, that things could get much worse in France if it doesn't get serious about slashing state spending and reforming stringent labor laws.

"This is a serious budget, it's a leftist budget and it's fighting budget," Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told French radio station Europe-1 Friday morning.

Because Hollande promised that he would slash the country's deficit to 3 percent next year ? a limit required by European rules ? the government must find ?30 billion in savings. One-third will come in spending cuts, with the rest in new or higher taxes on the wealthy and big companies, including a 75 percent tax on incomes over ?1 million.

Among the other measures included are: a new income tax level at 45 percent for those making more than ?150,000, an increase of capital gains taxes to bring them more in line with how salaries are taxed, and a cap on certain deductions for large companies on their income taxes.

The 75 percent tax will last for two years and has always been billed as a symbolic measure since it will bring in very little revenue. Several businessmen and politicians in the opposition have said that's exactly what's wrong with the 2013 budget: It sends the message that France doesn't like the rich and isn't open for business.

"France is sick from a model that isn't viable," said Guillaume Carou, CEO of Didaxis and president of the Club of Entrepreneurs, which represents 15,000 small businesses. "But (the government has) chosen to keep it, that's what the 2013 budget reveals."

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault rejected that characterization, however, insisting that the budget would win the battle against unemployment.

"It's a budget that aims to inspire confidence and to break the debt spiral that keeps growing and growing," he said after the budget was presented to the Cabinet.

The budget is built around an expectation of 0.8 percent growth for next year. If growth misses the projections, more cuts could be needed later.

Moscovici conceded that most economists predict the French economy will grow just 0.5 percent, but said that if the European debt crisis stabilizes, France would meet its targets.

Matt Reeves Exits The Twilight Zone

matt-reeves-the-twilight-zone-slice

Well this is a bummer.? It looked as if director Matt Reeves had finally settled on his Let Me In follow-up last year when he was set to direct a feature film adaptation of The Twilight Zone.? The project tapped Sherlock Holmes scribe Tony Peckham to rewrite the screenplay last December, but word on the Warner Bros. adaptation has been relatively quiet since then.? Now Variety?s Justin Kroll reports that, due to scheduling conflicts, Reeves has left the film.? Hit the jump for more, including what Reeves may tackle next.

matt-reeves-twilight-zoneThe directing gig was a highly sought-after job, as WB had?Christopher Nolan, Alfonso Cuaron, Michael Bay and Rupert Wyatt on their director shortlist to bring the adaptation to the big screen, so it was a sign of confidence that the studio signed Reeves to take the helm.? Let Me In displayed the filmmaker?s tremendous talent behind the camera and I was eager to see what he?d do with a large-scale property like Twilight Zone.

Kroll doesn?t specify the specific scheduling conflicts that led to Reeves leaving the project, but he recently signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV to write, direct, and supervise drama projects for the studio so he may have an idea he wants to flesh out in the television world.? Reeves co-created Felicity with J.J. Abrams, so he?s got quite a bit of TV experience under his belt.

Reeves has been developing feature film adaptations of the vampire novel The Passage and the Frankenstein twist This Dark Endeavor to direct, but we haven?t heard updates on those projects in quite a while.? Whatever he chooses as his next project, be it in TV or film, hopefully it comes to fruition relatively soon.

(AP) ? Spain and Greece outlined plans Thursday to further reduce government spending and raise taxes to convince international lenders and financial markets they are on the right track to cut their deficits.

The latest round of belt-tightening comes as economies across Europe get weaker and public resentment toward austerity grows stronger.

Spain's plan to slash its deficit in 2013 is viewed by many analysts as a signal that it's preparing to request a financial lifeline from other governments and the European Central Bank. To receive this help, countries must first show they are serious about reining in deficits.

"This is a budget in times of crisis but one to help get out of the crisis," deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said.

For similar reasons, Greece's coalition government agreed to cut spending over the next two years by ?11.5 billion ($14.77 billion). Without the cuts, Greece would have been cut off from vital bailout loans that it needs to pay its bills and keep it in the eurozone. The loans come from the International Monetary Fund, European Union and the ECB.

Financial markets cheered the budget-cutting. In Europe, stocks came back from one of their worst days in months in expectation of the Spanish measures. The benchmark stock index finished 0.7 percent higher in France and 0.2 percent higher in Germany and Britain. Borrowing costs for financially troubled Spain and Italy also edged down. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 100 points in afternoon trading.

Other news from around Europe showed that the region remains in trouble. Economic confidence in the 17 countries that use the euro fell to its lowest level in over three years, according to a survey by the European Union's Commission. Meanwhile, unemployment figures in Germany continued to drift higher, in spite of a small seasonal boost in jobs, underlining concerns that Europe's biggest economy is slowing down. Across the region six countries are in recession and economists predict the entire region could be heading for recession by the end of the year.

Throughout the three-year financial crisis, eurozone governments have had to impose harsh cuts and reforms to get control of their debts and ? in the case of Greece, Portugal and Ireland ? qualify for vital aid. The austerity measures have hit citizens with wage cuts and fewer services, and left their economies struggling through recessions as reduced government spending has undermined growth.

In some countries, the austerity measures have sparked violent protests but governments have pressed on with the cuts and reforms to get the eurozone financial crisis under control ? and to get help from other countries and organizations.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said Thursday Spain's draft budget for 2013 would cut overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion).

Recession-hit Spain has come under pressure to take up the ECB on its offer to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds to help lower borrowing costs for countries struggling to manage their debts. Such large-scale purchases of short-term government bonds would drive up their price and push down their interest rate and take some pressure off of financially stressed governments such as Spain.

Spain is at the center of the eurozone crisis ? its ?1.4 trillion ($1.8 trillion) economy is the fourth-largest among the 17 countries that use the euro and any request for a full bailout would stretch the region's finances. The country is struggling in a recession to prop up its shaky banking sector and support its heavily indebted regional governments. It has already introduced several packages of tax hikes, civil servant wage cuts and freezes in a bid to get out of the crisis.

To get help from the ECB, Spain must first ask for assistance from the rest of the eurozone. So far, the government has been reluctant to ask for fear of the conditions the other countries will attach to its aid. Analysts say the Spanish government hopes Thursday's budget measures will be enough to stop the eurozone imposing further spending and deficit controls if and when Spain asks for help.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the measures "go beyond" the steps European officials have recommended that Spain should take. He added that Spain was consulting with other countries in the bloc but has still not decided whether to ask for a bailout.

The country is battling to fulfill an EU commitment to reduce its deficit in relation to economic output from 8.9 percent last year to 6.3 percent in 2012, 4.5 percent next year and to 2.8 percent by the end of 2014.

Montoro said Spain would meet the 2012 deficit target despite recent reports that it was off-target eight months into the year. "We're on a very viable path," he said.

Among new taxes to be levied, Montoro said all national lottery prizes of more than ?2,500 ($3,210) would be taxed 20 percent. Saenz de Santamari, meanwhile, announced a new body to oversee regional and local government's adherence to deficit reduction targets.

Thursday's budget package comes in the wake of anti-austerity protests in Madrid over the past two nights, with further protests are planned for Saturday.

The Greek coalition government hopes that Thursday's agreement on the latest round of austerity cuts will be enough to meet the targets demanded by its international lenders and keep the vital bailout loans coming.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras said the long-delayed agreement placed him in a stronger negotiating position ahead of talks Monday with representatives from the country's bailout creditors, who will have the final word on the cutbacks.

Greece has relied on international bailouts since May 2010. In return, it has imposed a punishing austerity program, repeatedly slashing incomes, hiking taxes and raising retirement ages.

On top of the ?11.5 billion that has to be axed from state spending in 2013-14, Athens must also boost state revenues by an additional ?2 billion over the next two years through tax reform and improved tax collection.

The three-party meeting came a day after more than 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens, in a demonstration marred by clashes between anarchists and riot police.

The conservative-led coalition has been debating the new cutbacks for about two months, but a deal was delayed by opposition from the two center-left junior partners ? coupled with disagreements with the austerity inspectors.

Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos said after Thursday's two-and-a-half hour talks that he would "struggle to the end to ensure that these measures are not across the board and are fair ... and that they are truly the last," as Samaras has pledged.

With more than half of all adults allergic to poison ivy, oak and sumac, scientists are reporting an advance toward an inexpensive spray that could reveal the presence of the rash-causing toxic oil on the skin, clothing, garden tools, and even the family cat or dog. Using the spray, described in ACS' The Journal of Organic Chemistry would enable people to wash off the oil, or avoid further contact, in time to sidestep days of misery.

Rebecca Braslau and colleagues explain that allergic reactions to oils of the toxic trio are more than a nusiance. They claim a huge human and economic toll, accounting for thousands of medical visits, days lost from work and school and sheer misery for the victims. It takes only 0.04th of a drop of the plants' oil to trigger a reaction, and the oil is invisible. The scientists thus sought to begin developing a way to make the oil visible, so that people can do a reality check after venturing into outdoor areas where the toxic plants grow.

They describe development of a spray that, when applied to leaves of poison ivy, oak and sumac, reacts with urushiol, the toxic oil produced by those plants. When exposed to an ordinary fluorescent light, the spray glows if urushiol is present, revealing the location of the oil. "This constitutes the groundwork for the future development of a spray to detect urushiol to avoid contact dermatitis," the scientists say.

John Lewis gorgeousness | tales from the village

Home heroes ? family favourites

(Guest blog today from the lovely John Lewis, known as John and Lewis in our family thanks to child no 4._

It?s often the simplest things that make us smile and certain products can have emotional associations all of their own. Here we look at three home heroes that have delighted on a day-to-day basis throughout the generations to become part of the family.

Put your feet up

Still the central point of many a front room, the humble coffee table can come to tell stories all of its own: marks from homework completed in front of the TV, special books and magazines collected over the years that make the grade each time it comes to a clear out and chips and stains from when ?no feet and coasters? rules were ignored. If you?re on the lookout for your family investment piece, sleek Mid-Century styles are a very popular choice at the minute thanks to the 1950s/1960s revival, and you can?t go wrong with sturdy oak country cottage coffee tables if you have the room.

?

Tea and cake

Secrets, laughs and tears are all shared over a cup of tea and cake and with the resurgence of interest in home baking and financial benefits of entertaining at home, chipped white crockery just won?t cut it. Collections of crockery are cultivated and treasured by house-proud hosts, with collectible second-hand pieces picked up at flea markets, car boot sales and online and investments made in new tableware sets soon proving their value at popular domestic tea parties. For that vintage look without the hassle of the hunt, look to Cath Kidston?s range of pretty floral print pieces.

Soundtrack to your life

There?s nothing quite like settling down with a cuppa to leaf through a magazine, or taking a long soak whilst listening to your favourite station on the radio. It?s the one music and audio medium that will have played a part in the life of your grandparents, that of your parents and now your own. Switching from TV to radio can also relieve eye strain and help you to be more present ? great for family time. The Roberts Revival DAB radio combines that homely retro feel with state-of-the-art technology, offering the best of both worlds. And you can choose from powdery pastels, deep war-time shades or even pretty prints.

Zoo zeroes in?on?cause of panda's death

National Zoo officials said Monday that preliminary necropsy results from the zoo's recently deceased panda cub show that the cub had fluid in its abdomen and some discoloration in the liver.

Chief Veterinarian Suzan Murray said the free fluid in the abdomen was abnormal for a cub. The cub ? which was unnamed ? weighed 100 grams, had nursed and had a coat that was "just beautiful," Murray said.

The cub is believed to have been a female, Murray said, since it seemed to be developing ovary-like tissue.

Read the original story on NBCWashington.com

There was no evidence of external trauma to the cub, meaning that her death wasn't caused by a crush injury. But the color of the cub's liver gave zookeepers pause. "Typically, livers have a very uniform color," Murray said, but she was hesitant to blame the discoloration for the death.

Full necropsy results should be back in two weeks, at which time Murray said the zoo would know definitively why the cub died.

Mei Xiang, the cub's mother, appears to still have a maternal instinct. "Sadly, we have witnessed her cradling an object for most of the night," Kelly said.

But Mei Xiang has left her den, and keepers were able to draw blood from her. Murray said preliminary test results are normal. Once she starts leaving the den more frequently, the National Zoo expects to reopen the Panda House.

The cub was born unexpectedly last Sunday, Sept. 16 . The odds of Mei conceiving a cub after five consecutive pseudopregnancies since 2007 had been less than 10 percent, the zoo said last week.

Pakistan Bounty On Anti-Islam Filmmaker: Government Distances ...

ISLAMABAD ? The Pakistani government on Monday distanced itself from an offer by one of its Cabinet ministers to pay $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of an anti-Islam film that has sparked violent protests across the Muslim world.

The film, "Innocence of Muslims," has enraged many Muslims for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to protests over the film, which also has renewed debate over freedom of expression in the U.S. and in Europe.

Adding to the anger in the Muslim world was a decision by a French satirical magazine to publish lewd pictures of the prophet last week, prompting French authorities to order the temporary closure of around 20 overseas missions out of fear they'd be targeted by demonstrators.

Some of the most intense and sustained protests have come in Pakistan, where the role of Islam in society is sacrosanct and anti-American sentiment runs high. But even in that atmosphere, the bounty offered by Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has drawn criticism.

Bilour said Saturday that he would pay $100,000 out of his own pocket to anyone who kills the man behind the inflammatory film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. The filmmaker was forced into hiding after the 14-minute movie trailer rose to prominence.

Bilour also appealed to al-Qaida and Taliban militants to help eliminate the filmmaker.

Pakistan's Foreign Office said in a statement Monday that the bounty on the filmmaker's head reflected Bilour's personal view and was not official government policy.

The minister belongs to the secular Awami National Party, an ally in the government of President Asif Ali Zardari. His comments struck a nerve within his own party, which is considered anti-Taliban and has lost several leaders in the fight against the insurgency.

A party spokesman, Haji Adeel, said the statement was Bilour's personal view, and that the party had sought an explanation from him.

"We are a secular party," he said. "We consider al-Qaida and Taliban as our enemy."

Pakistan's government declared last Friday a national holiday ? "Day of Love for the Prophet" ? and called on people to take to the streets to protest the film peacefully. But the demonstrations turned violent, and at least 21 people were killed.

In Iran, the culture minister said his country will boycott the 2013 Oscars and not field a candidate for the foreign film category in protest against the video.

Mohammed Hosseini said Tehran would not submit an entry for next year's awards due to the "intolerable insult to the Prophet of Islam," the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

The committee has already picked "Ye Habbeh Ghand," or "A Cube of Sugar" ? a film about a family wedding turning into a funeral when the groom's relative dies ? as Iran's entry as best foreign film. But the government must endorse the selection for it to become official.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi in February won the Oscar for best foreign film for his movie, "A Separation" ? the first such prize for Iran.

Nearly two weeks after demonstrations began with protesters scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, the film continued to draw people out into the streets in protest.

In Sri Lanka, about 5,000 protesters marched through the nation's capital demanding the U.S. ban the film and punish its creators. The demonstrators blocked traffic as they marched on a main road in Colombo, carrying signs and banners that read "Punishment for those involved" and "Our hearts are wounded and chests full of anger."

Protest organizer Kamil Hussain urged the U.S. to ban "Innocence of Muslims" and remove it from YouTube, saying "insulting a religious leader is not freedom of speech."

A small protest also took place in northern Nigeria, where hundreds of Muslims marched peacefully through the streets of the city of Kaduna. Demonstrators scrawled graffiti on walls reading: "Death to the Americans, Death to the Israelites."

Demonstrations in Nigeria, a nation largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north, have been peaceful, though one protest was broken up by soldiers firing into the air.

In Lebanon, a military prosecutor indicted 45 people related to attacks on policemen and a KFC restaurant during protests against the film, judicial authorities said.

On Sept. 14, security forces opened fire in the northern city of Tripoli, killing one person and wounding 25 after a crowd attacked the KFC and a Hardee's restaurant.

Prosecutor Saqr Saqr charged the 45 on accusations including attacking policemen, damaging security vehicles and burning a restaurant, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Since one person was killed in the incident, some of the accused could get life in prison, if convicted.

In Sweden, an appeals court acquitted three men accused of plotting to murder a Swedish artist who had depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog. Upholding a lower court's ruling, the appeals court in Goteborg said Monday there was no conclusive evidence that the three men of Iraqi and Somali origin had planned to kill Lars Vilks in September last year.

The men were carrying knives when they were arrested after inquiring about Vilks at an art exhibition where he had been expected to appear but did not do so. Vilks lives under police protection after his 2007 drawing led to death threats from militant Islamists.

Gillard to woo Africa in final stage of UN bid

text

Meeting ... Mohammed Mursi. Photo: AP

THE Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will focus heavily on African nations while in New York this week as she leads the final concerted push for Australia to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

She is scheduled to arrive in New York this morning for the annual four-day UN General Assembly and will lead lobbying efforts with the backing of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bob Carr, and his parliamentary secretary, Richard Marles.

Under a process begun in 2008 by the then prime minister Kevin Rudd, Australia is vying for one of the 10 non-permanent seats for 2013 and 2014. The vote of the 193 UN members will be on October 18 and 128 votes are needed.

Australia - which has served four times on the Security Council, the last time in 1986 - belongs to a bloc known as Western Europe and Others Group. It is competing with Luxembourg and Finland for one of two spots allotted to that bloc.

''It's a very difficult and close race,'' said an official familiar with the bid. ''We are competitive but we can't afford to be complacent.''

Most world leaders, including the US President, Barack Obama, will be in New York. Ms Gillard is planning up to 10 bilateral meetings with African leaders. She will use her address to the General Assembly, scheduled for early Thursday morning Sydney time, to showcase Australia's commitment to the organisation of which it was a founding member.

African nations have 54 votes and Ms Gillard cancelled an invitation to travel to a summit of African leaders in early July because the carbon price had just been introduced. This was considered, in diplomatic circles, not to have helped Australia's chances.

Her schedule includes meetings with the new President of Egypt, Mohammed Mursi, as well as the leaders of Malawi, Liberia and South Africa. She will also attend a meeting looking at the plights of Mali, Niger and Mauritania.

Australia has been spending more of its aid budget in Africa in an attempt to win the UN seat.

In her address, Ms Gillard is expected to point out Australia has contributed 65,000 personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, is the 12th-largest contributor to the UN's budget and has the world's 11th-highest foreign aid budget.

She is also scheduled to met the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Stocks higher in US; in Europe, vows to save euro

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stocks traded higher Friday, with investors latching on to a few mildly hopeful signs about the economy.

Shortly after noon Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 43 points at 13,640. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up six to 1,466. The Nasdaq composite index was up 16 to 3,192.

Homebuilder KB Home swung to a quarterly profit by selling pricier homes. The stock popped $1.46, or more than 11 percent, to $14.57.

Darden Restaurants, parent of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, also reported a higher profit in its latest quarter. The stock rose $2.47, or more than 4 percent, to $57.19.

Apple, propelled by the frenzy around the release of the iPhone 5, rose $6.12, or just less than 1 percent, to $704.82.

And in Europe, Italy's premier and Greece's prime minister met and repeated their conviction for "the absolute need to safeguard the integrity of the eurozone," according to a statement from the Italian leader's office. Spain appeared near to working out terms for requesting a bailout from Europe.

Both developments points to a Europe that, while still grappling with a heavy debt crisis, is committed to finding a solution.

Still, the market's rise Friday and in recent weeks seems like a paradox against a backdrop of high unemployment, unimpressive economic growth and a looming fiscal cliff, when spending cuts and higher taxes could kick in this year.

That's because the rise has been more about the old adage to not "fight the Fed" rather than hope that the economy is proving.

This week, the Bank of Japan agreed to a new program where it would buy assets to try to prop up the country's market. Last week the Federal Reserve made a similar comment, and before that the European Central Bank did.

But the actions don't mean the economy is improving. In fact, they mean quite the opposite: that the central banks think the economy is bad enough that it can't survive on its own.

Timothy Leach, wealth management chief investment officer for U.S. Bank in San Francisco, described the central banks' actions as positive, but said they're buying time more than fixing underlying fiscal problems.

"But at least they're taking some of the pressure off," Leach said, "allowing policymakers some additional time to try to achieve those real solutions."

Signs of the underlying trouble were abundant.

The Labor Department reported Friday that unemployment rose in 26 states last month. The World Trade Organization cuts its estimates for growth in global trade this year and next.

Darden, despite its higher profits, noted it has to rework the menu to attract customers wary about spending.

Greece still hasn't agreed to a detailed plan to cut spending, which it must do to get the bailout money from Europe. Germany's finance minister argued that Spain doesn't need a second aid program, considering how it already got a bailout for its banks.

MaMa's Crock Pot Cube Steak | Stacy Makes Cents

Y?all, I have this awesome friend?Tia. She can COOK. You might remember her from the cheesecake post. She used to own a restaurant?did I mention she can COOK? I?m tickled pink she?s sharing a family crock pot recipe with us today. Make it ? you won?t be sorry. With a name like Sweet T ? It?s a Way of Life, you know you can?t go wrong.

A family recipe

My MaMa (pronounced MawMaw, don?t ask me why, that?s just how we spelled it) made this recipe often and I loved it. She wrote it down for me on one of those little spiral-topped pocket notebooks that you used to get from the bank. I still have it, written in her handwriting. She passed away 15 years ago, so this recipe is very special to me.?

Seasonings baby!

The measurements are more suggestions than anything. I do it a little differently each time I make it. Really, you have to just do it to your own liking.? This is SO very quick you can make it up in about 10 minutes.? It?s perfect for putting in the crock-pot when you have a busy day planned and you know you aren?t going to want to take the time to make dinner at the end of the day.

Flour mixture

In a shallow dish or on a plate, combine the flour, salt and pepper. Sometimes I add a little garlic powder or meat tenderizer. Just season it to your liking, although I don?t think something like mint would be a good idea.? But hey, it?s your cube steak.

Olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Brown in oil

While it is heating, begin dredging the steaks in the flour, coating both sides well, and then place in the hot oil to brown. Turn once a nice crust has formed. While the steaks are browning, slice the onion. I like a lot of onion in mine (they will cook down a LOT!) so I often use two. Again, it?s up to you.

Layers

Next, layer half of the browned steaks, half of the onions, half of the mushrooms, and half of the cream of mushroom soup. And, you guessed it, repeat the layers.

Deglazing the pan

Don?t throw the skillet in the sink just yet though! You will have all those little bits of browned goodness in the bottom of it. This is where the beef broth comes in ? deglaze that pan!? You could use red wine, water and Worcestershire sauce; there are several options for this. Turn the heat up just a tad, pour the broth (or whatever you are using) into the searing hot skillet and scrub the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to get it all up and mixed together well.

Browned bits of goodness!

When all the little bits are scraped up, pour the whole lot of it over the top of the ingredients in the crock-pot.

Cook that baby!

Even the cooking time and temperatures are variable here. You can cook it on high for 4-6 hours, or put it on low for 8-12 hours. Personally, I like it cooked down so much that the meat is just falling apart, so I go with the longer end of the spectrum.

Crock Pot Cube Steak

This makes a lot of sauce, so I serve it over noodles. And I love this with sour cream; you could mix it in right before serving or just throw some on top of each serving. I serve it with a salad or green beans, although I didn?t get either on the plate for these pictures!

I hope you all love this simple and quick dish as much as MaMa and I!

1 pkg (6-8 pc) cube steak

1 Onion, sliced

2 Cans Cream of Mushroom Soup (Stacy uses?Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup)

1 Cup Beef Broth

16 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced

? cup flour

? tsp salt

? tsp pepper

2 TBSP olive oil

Sour Cream (optional)

Cooked noodles

?

In a shallow dish or on a plate, combine the flour, salt and pepper.?Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. While it is heating, begin dredging the steaks in the flour, coating both sides well, and then place in the hot oil to brown. Turn once a nice crust has formed. While the steaks are browning, slice the onion.

Next, layer half of the browned steaks, half of the onions, half of the mushrooms, and half of the cream of mushroom soup. And, you guessed it, repeat the layers.

Turn the heat up just a tad, pour the broth (or whatever you are using) into the searing hot skillet and scrub the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to get it all up and mixed together well. When all the little bits are scraped up, pour the whole lot of it over the top of the ingredients in the crock-pot.

You can cook it on high for 4-6 hours, or put it on low for 8-12 hours.

This makes a lot of sauce, so I serve it over noodles. And I love this with sour cream; you could mix it in right before serving or just throw some on top of each serving.

Sweet T ? It?s a Way of Life

I am a stay at home mom who loves to create ? ANYTHING! I love flea markets, estate sales and my Granny?s house. The name ?Sweet T ? It?s A Way of Life? is symbolic for me in a few different ways. First of all my name is Tia ? hence the Sweet T. And what I do is a way of life, any artist will tell you that. It?s not a hobby or an interest, it?s who I am, what I do. These are the talents that God has given me and it would be a waste not to use them! Then, you also have the fact that I am a Southern Girl and in the South, sweet tea isn?t just a drink, it?s a way of life. It?s who we are, what we do.
