This is a genuinely good 7 inch tablet that is incredibly affordable, rivalling other small tablets such as the iPad mini. However the Nexus 7 is around ?100 cheaper, starting at approximately ?160. For this you get an Android tablet with a 7 inch screen and 16gb of storage. Other variants are available, for example a 32gb model, and one with 3g capabilities for use with a data plan.
The battery life is acceptable, but by no means great. It'll last a good few hours, but any gaming and the battery life drops dramatically. I should point out that my battery life could be extended by turning the brightness down, turning off GPS etc when not using them and downloading various battery-saving apps from the app store. Also, using the supplied micro USB charger recharges the battery incredibly quickly, so it's not much of a problem unless out and about lots.
The screen size is 7 inches, which is either perfect, or too small depending on what you will be using it for. On the plus side, it is small enough to be transported easily, it can easily fit into my girlfriends handbag, I can mount it in my car to be used as a SatNav without obscuring my view of the road, and a smaller screen means battery life is better than most 10 inch tablets. However, for accessing word documents and other files the screen can seem small, and so businessmen hoping to do a bit of work on the way to the office might want to forget about this model. However, the Google Nexus 10 is very similar to the Nexus 7 but with a 10 inch screen, so may be worth a look.
Now on to the operating system. The Nexus 7 uses the Android Operating System. It is very quick, allows for a lot of apps on various screens just like the iPad Mini, and allows you to create a personalised background. The Google Play store has a vast amount of free apps and widgets, allowing you to customise your Nexus 7 to you. It also supports multiple profiles, so you can share the tablet with someone else with ease.
However, make sure you spend a decent amount of money on a case. I dropped mine from a very small height and, despite being in the case, the screen cracked. I now regret buying a cheap ?5 case for my ?200 tablet, where a decent ?20-?30 case would have prevented me having to buy a new tablet. Also buy a specific Nexus 7 case, as these will have a small magnet in which will put the tablet to sleep when the case is shut.
One last word of warning to Nexus 7 owners: Do not let the battery run completely flat. The tablet will become extremely slow to charge, taking several hours to charge enough to turn back on again. Attempting to turn it on before it is charged enough will drain what little charge there is attempting to boot up, meaning you have to start again. Once it is up and running it charges as normal. A quick google search indicates that I am not alone in this. Not a problem in itself, but very annoying when you want to use it and find it's out of battery, forcing a several hour wait.
Summary: Definitely worth the money, a real iPad beater.
