RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? The state says the conviction of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend should stand.
In a filing with the Virginia Court of Appeals, the state lays out its reasons why George W. Huguely V?s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction should be rejected.
The Chevy Chase, Md., man was sentenced to 23 years in state prison for the May 2010 slaying of Yeardley Love, 22, in her Charlottesville apartment.
Huguely?s attorneys argue he was denied a fair trial by a judge who rushed the sensational case to jurors even when one of the defendant?s attorneys fell ill.
But the state said the judge was correct to move forward with the trial after Huguely?s co-counsel assured the court he could continue.
