Bernie celebrates Brad Freed's grand slam against Campbell Monday. Bernie will play Neelyville Thursday at 6 p.m. in the September Showdown championship.
Second-seeded Bernie scored in every inning but the second and limited Campbell to a single run in three different innings.
"We put the ball in play and they made a few mistakes," Bernie coach Darrin Shipman said. "We were able to capitalize on them with a couple of big hits. I'm just happy we were able to do that. Early on I thought we could have capitalized a little bit more on a few of their mistakes and we only got one or two runs, but overall we put the bat on the ball pretty well."
Justin Stanfield drove home a runner from third in the bottom of the first inning when he grounded out. An RBI single by Tommy Steward in the top of the second tied the contest at 1-1.
Brand Freed put Bernie back on top with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. The Mules added two additional runs in the third on Campbell errors.
Devin Trammell had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to pad Bernie's lead to 5-1.
The Mules added an unearned run in the fifth and scored five more times in the sixth.
Freed had a grand slam in the sixth and Owen Foster collected an RBI double.
An RBI single by Christian Dean in the sixth and Austin Wethington in the seventh accounted for Campbell's final runs.
Freed, who pitched three innings Saturday, earned a complete-game victory Monday. He allowed three runs, six hits, struck out eight and walked two.
"I thought he pitched really well today," Shipman said. "He was finally able to get his curveball over for strikes, which allowed him to keep them off-balance. He threw the ball really well, and hard sometimes. We played good defense behind him and all-in-all it was a good day.
Top-seeded Neelyville beat fifth-seeded Leopold 10-0 in five innings in the second semifinal Monday.
Bernie (16-4) will play Neelyville Thursday at 6 p.m. in the championship of the Bernie Fall September Showdown.
Bernie vs. Puxico
BERNIE, Mo. - The Bernie Mules opened the eight-team tournament with a 9-8 10-inning win against the seventh-seeded Puxico Indians Saturday.
The game ended when Justin Stanfield collected a one-out double and Trey Kirkpatrick followed with an RBI-single in the bottom of the tenth inning.
"Earlier in the year he was really hitting the ball well," Bernie coach Darrin Shipman said of Kirkpatrick. "He's only a sophomore and has struggled a little bit, but when he stays in the strike zone, especially waist down, he can hit the ball. I told him to not swing at anything above the waist and he got one and hit it.
"Justin has come a long way this year and that leadoff double was huge," Shipman added. "I'm really proud of both of those guys because they really helped us this year."
Bernie led the game 8-6 entering the seventh inning. Tim Hancock collected a one-out single and Chris Dunivan followed by drawing a one-out walk to put two runners on base with one out.
An RBI single by Austin Rodgers trimmed the deficit to 8-7. Nathan Dare drove home the tying run when he grounded out for the second out of the frame. Bernie reliever Devin Trammell struck out the next hitter he faced to end the top of the seventh.
"I told the kids 'I give Puxico the credit. They played their butts off over there.'" Shipman said. "I told their coach after the game 'you guys played great today.' I didn't think we played terrible, they just played really good. They've come a long way and I want to give them the credit."
Puxico scored at least one run in each of the first four innings. Seth Luttrull had an RBI single in the top of the first, Chris Siler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the second, Hancock had a two-run homer in the top of the third and Luttrull hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Puxico led 5-1 heading to the bottom of the third and 6-3 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.
"We were able to put the bat on the center of the ball and use the area to our advantage," Puxico coach Jon Simpher said. "That's some of the best pitching we've seen and some of the best offense we've had all year."
Josh Stevens hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Bernie its first lead at 7-6. Bernie tacked on a valuable insurance run when Trammell hit a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"Josh can really hit the ball hard and Devin's starting to find his swing," Shipman said. "What I like is Devin was also hit by pitch and walked a couple times to get on base."
Bernie used three hurlers.
Stanfield pitched the first two innings and allowed three runs. Freed pitched the next three innings and allowed three runs. Trammell pitched the remainder of the game and earned a victory on the mound.
Freed had an RBI single for the Mules in the bottom of the first inning. Bernie scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Austin Teichman pitched the first five innings for Puxico. Luttrull pitched the remainder of the contest for Puxico.
"That's the best game we've played all year," Simpher said. "Bernie's a great opponent and we just found ways to do things right. We've been working on things all year and today we found a way to finally put it all together and play a great game against one of the best teams in the area."
In other first-round action Saturday fifth-seeded Leopold beat fourth-seeded Bloomfield 8-7, top-seeded Neelyville defeated eight-seeded Southland 25-3 in three innings and third-seeded Campbell beat Puxico 16-2.
